1 Alleluia.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord ♦︎
and have great delight in his commandments.
2 Their descendants will be mighty in the land, ♦︎
a generation of the faithful that will be blest.
3 Wealth and riches will be in their house, ♦︎
and their righteousness endures for ever.
4 Light shines in the darkness for the upright; ♦︎
gracious and full of compassion are the righteous.
5 It goes well with those who are generous in lending ♦︎
and order their affairs with justice,
6 For they will never be shaken; ♦︎
the righteous will be held in everlasting remembrance.
7 They will not be afraid of any evil tidings; ♦︎
their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 Their heart is sustained and will not fear, ♦︎
until they see the downfall of their foes.
9 They have given freely to the poor;
their righteousness stands fast for ever; ♦︎
their head will be exalted with honour.
10 The wicked shall see it and be angry;
they shall gnash their teeth in despair; ♦︎
the desire of the wicked shall perish.

21The kings heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;
he turns it wherever he will.
2 All deeds are right in the sight of the doer,
but the Lord weighs the heart.
3 To do righteousness and justice
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
4 Haughty eyes and a proud heart
the lamp of the wickedare sin.
24 The proud, haughty person, named Scoffer,
acts with arrogant pride.
25 The craving of the lazy person is fatal,
for lazy hands refuse to labour.
26 All day long the wicked covet,*
but the righteous give and do not hold back.

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favour of him. 21And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom. 22But Jesus answered, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?* They said to him, We are able. 23He said to them, You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.
24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. 25But Jesus called them to him and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 26It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; 28just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
