7  The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; ♦︎
the testimony of the Lord is sure
and gives wisdom to the simple.
8  The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart; ♦︎
the commandment of the Lord is pure
and gives light to the eyes.
9  The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; ♦︎
the judgements of the Lord are true
      and righteous altogether.
10  More to be desired are they than gold,
more than much fine gold, ♦︎
   sweeter also than honey,
      dripping from the honeycomb.
11  By them also is your servant taught ♦︎
and in keeping them there is great reward.
12  Who can tell how often they offend? ♦︎
O cleanse me from my secret faults!
13  Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins
lest they get dominion over me; ♦︎
   so shall I be undefiled,
      and innocent of great offence.
14  Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight, ♦︎
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Deuteronomy 27: 1-10

The Inscribed Stones and Altar on Mount Ebal

27Then Moses and the elders of Israel charged all the people as follows: Keep the entire commandment that I am commanding you today. 2On the day that you cross over the Jordan into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and cover them with plaster. 3You shall write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over, to enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4So when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, about which I am commanding you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall cover them with plaster. 5And you shall build an altar there to the Lord your God, an altar of stones on which you have not used an iron tool. 6You must build the altar of the Lord your God of unhewn* stones. Then offer up burnt-offerings on it to the Lord your God, 7make sacrifices of well-being, and eat them there, rejoicing before the Lord your God. 8You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very clearly.

Then Moses and the levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying: Keep silence and hear, O Israel! This very day you have become the people of the Lord your God. 10Therefore obey the Lord your God, observing his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today.

Matthew 5: 13-20

Salt and Light

13 ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

14 ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

The Law and the Prophets

17 ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter,* not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19Therefore, whoever breaks* one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
