Psalm 26

1  Give judgement for me, O Lord,
for I have walked with integrity; ♦︎
I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.
2  Test me, O Lord, and try me; ♦︎
examine my heart and my mind.
3  For your love is before my eyes; ♦︎
I have walked in your truth.
4  I have not joined the company of the false, ♦︎
   nor consorted with the deceitful.
5  I hate the gathering of evildoers ♦︎
and I will not sit down with the wicked.
6  I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord, ♦︎
that I may go about your altar,
7  To make heard the voice of thanksgiving ♦︎
and tell of all your wonderful deeds.
8  Lord, I love the house of your habitation ♦︎
and the place where your glory abides.
9  Sweep me not away with sinners, ♦︎
nor my life with the bloodthirsty,
10  Whose hands are full of wicked schemes ♦︎
and their right hand full of bribes.
11  As for me, I will walk with integrity; ♦︎
redeem me, Lord, and be merciful to me.
12  My foot stands firm; ♦︎
in the great congregation I will bless the Lord.

Psalm 28

1  To you I call, O Lord my rock;
be not deaf to my cry, ♦︎
lest, if you do not hear me,
I become like those who go down to the Pit.
2  Hear the voice of my prayer when I cry out to you, ♦︎
when I lift up my hands to your holy of holies.
3  Do not snatch me away with the wicked,
      with the evildoers, ♦︎
who speak peaceably with their neighbours,
while malice is in their hearts.
4  Repay them according to their deeds ♦︎
and according to the wickedness of their devices.
5  Reward them according to the work of their hands ♦︎
and pay them their just deserts.
6  They take no heed of the Lord’s doings,
nor of the works of his hands; ♦︎
therefore shall he break them down
      and not build them up.
7  Blessed be the Lord, ♦︎
for he has heard the voice of my prayer.
8  The Lord is my strength and my shield; ♦︎
   my heart has trusted in him and I am helped;
9  Therefore my heart dances for joy ♦︎
and in my song will I praise him.
10  The Lord is the strength of his people, ♦︎
a safe refuge for his anointed.
11  Save your people and bless your inheritance; ♦︎
shepherd them and carry them for ever.

2 Samuel 16: 1-23

David’s Adversaries

16When David had passed a little beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth* met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, carrying two hundred loaves of bread, one hundred bunches of raisins, one hundred of summer fruits, and one skin of wine. 2The king said to Ziba, ‘Why have you brought these?’ Ziba answered, ‘The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride, the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat, and the wine is for those to drink who faint in the wilderness.’ 3The king said, ‘And where is your master’s son?’ Ziba said to the king, ‘He remains in Jerusalem; for he said, “Today the house of Israel will give me back my grandfather’s kingdom.” 4Then the king said to Ziba, ‘All that belonged to Mephibosheth* is now yours.’ Ziba said, ‘I do obeisance; let me find favour in your sight, my lord the king.’

Shimei Curses David

When King David came to Bahurim, a man of the family of the house of Saul came out whose name was Shimei son of Gera; he came out cursing. 6He threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David; now all the people and all the warriors were on his right and on his left. 7Shimei shouted while he cursed, ‘Out! Out! Murderer! Scoundrel! 8The Lord has avenged on all of you the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. See, disaster has overtaken you; for you are a man of blood.’

Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, ‘Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.’ 10But the king said, ‘What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord has said to him, “Curse David”, who then shall say, “Why have you done so?” 11David said to Abishai and to all his servants, ‘My own son seeks my life; how much more now may this Benjaminite! Let him alone, and let him curse; for the Lord has bidden him. 12It may be that the Lord will look on my distress,* and the Lord will repay me with good for this cursing of me today.’ 13So David and his men went on the road, while Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went, throwing stones and flinging dust at him. 14The king and all the people who were with him arrived weary at the Jordan;* and there he refreshed himself.

The Counsel of Ahithophel

15 Now Absalom and all the Israelites* came to Jerusalem; Ahithophel was with him. 16When Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, ‘Long live the king! Long live the king!’ 17Absalom said to Hushai, ‘Is this your loyalty to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?’ 18Hushai said to Absalom, ‘No; but the one whom the Lord and this people and all the Israelites have chosen, his I will be, and with him I will remain. 19Moreover, whom should I serve? Should it not be his son? Just as I have served your father, so I will serve you.’

20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, ‘Give us your counsel; what shall we do?’ 21Ahithophel said to Absalom, ‘Go in to your father’s concubines, the ones he has left to look after the house; and all Israel will hear that you have made yourself odious to your father, and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.’ 22So they pitched a tent for Absalom upon the roof; and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the oracle* of God; so all the counsel of Ahithophel was esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.

Mark 11: 1-11

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

11When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and said to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, “Why are you doing this?” just say this, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.” 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’ 6They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
‘Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10   Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
