Psalm 3

1  Lord, how many are my adversaries; ♦︎
many are they who rise up against me.
2  Many are they who say to my soul, ♦︎
‘There is no help for you in your God.’
3  But you, Lord, are a shield about me; ♦︎
you are my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
4  When I cry aloud to the Lord, ♦︎
   he will answer me from his holy hill;
5  I lie down and sleep and rise again, ♦︎
   because the Lord sustains me.
6  I will not be afraid of hordes of the peoples ♦︎
that have set themselves against me all around.
7  Rise up, O Lord, and deliver me, O my God, ♦︎
for you strike all my enemies on the cheek
and break the teeth of the wicked.
8  Salvation belongs to the Lord: ♦︎
may your blessing be upon your people.

Psalm 6

1  O Lord, rebuke me not in your wrath; ♦︎
neither chasten me in your fierce anger.
2  Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am weak; ♦︎
Lord, heal me, for my bones are racked.
3  My soul also shakes with terror; ♦︎
how long, O Lord, how long?
4  Turn again, O Lord, and deliver my soul; ♦︎
save me for your loving mercy’s sake.
5  For in death no one remembers you; ♦︎
and who can give you thanks in the grave?
6  I am weary with my groaning; ♦︎
every night I drench my pillow
and flood my bed with my tears.
7  My eyes are wasted with grief ♦︎
and worn away because of all my enemies.
8  Depart from me, all you that do evil, ♦︎
for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping.
9  The Lord has heard my supplication; ♦︎
the Lord will receive my prayer.
10  All my enemies shall be put to shame and confusion; ♦︎
they shall suddenly turn back in their shame.

Genesis 37: 25-36

25 Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26Then Judah said to his brothers, ‘What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.’ And his brothers agreed. 28When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes. 30He returned to his brothers, and said, ‘The boy is gone; and I, where can I turn?’ 31Then they took Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat, and dipped the robe in the blood. 32They had the long robe with sleeves* taken to their father, and they said, ‘This we have found; see now whether it is your son’s robe or not.’ 33He recognized it, and said, ‘It is my son’s robe! A wild animal has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.’ 34Then Jacob tore his garments, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son for many days. 35All his sons and all his daughters sought to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and said, ‘No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.’ Thus his father bewailed him. 36Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

1 Corinthians 2: 1-13

Proclaiming Christ Crucified

2When I came to you, brothers and sisters,* I did not come proclaiming the mystery* of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. 2For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom,* but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

The True Wisdom of God

6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written,
‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
   nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him’—
10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.*
