1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame; ♦︎
deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your ear to me; ♦︎
make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong rock, a fortress to save me,
for you are my rock and my stronghold; ♦︎
guide me, and lead me for your names sake.
4 Take me out of the net
that they have laid secretly for me, ♦︎
for you are my strength.
5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, ♦︎
for you have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols; ♦︎
I put my trust in the Lord.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your mercy, ♦︎
for you have seen my affliction
and known my soul in adversity.
8 You have not shut me up in the hand of the enemy; ♦︎
you have set my feet in an open place.
9 Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in trouble; ♦︎
my eye is consumed with sorrow,
my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is wasted with grief,
and my years with sighing; ♦︎
my strength fails me because of my affliction,
and my bones are consumed.
11 I have become a reproach to all my enemies
and even to my neighbours,
an object of dread to my acquaintances; ♦︎
when they see me in the street they flee from me.
12 I am forgotten like one that is dead, out of mind; ♦︎
I have become like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd;
fear is on every side; ♦︎
they scheme together against me,
and plot to take my life.
14 But my trust is in you, O Lord. ♦︎
I have said, You are my God.
15 My times are in your hand; ♦︎
deliver me from the hand of my enemies,
and from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, ♦︎
and save me for your mercys sake.
17 Lord, let me not be confounded
for I have called upon you; ♦︎
but let the wicked be put to shame;
let them be silent in the grave.
18 Let the lying lips be put to silence ♦︎
that speak against the righteous
with arrogance, disdain and contempt.
19 How abundant is your goodness, O Lord,
which you have laid up for those who fear you; ♦︎
which you have prepared in the sight of all
for those who put their trust in you.
20 You hide them in the shelter of your presence
from those who slander them; ♦︎
you keep them safe in your refuge from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the Lord! ♦︎
For he has shown me his steadfast love
when I was as a city besieged.
22 I had said in my alarm,
I have been cut off from the sight of your eyes. ♦︎
Nevertheless, you heard the voice of my prayer
when I cried out to you.
23 Love the Lord, all you his servants; ♦︎
for the Lord protects the faithful,
but repays to the full the proud.
24 Be strong and let your heart take courage, ♦︎
all you who wait in hope for the Lord.

26 Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mothers name was Zeruah, a widow, rebelled against the king. 27The following was the reason he rebelled against the king. Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the gap in the wall* of the city of his father David. 28The man Jeroboam was very able, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious he gave him charge over all the forced labour of the house of Joseph. 29About that time, when Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Ahijah had clothed himself with a new garment. The two of them were alone in the open country 30when Ahijah laid hold of the new garment he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. 31He then said to Jeroboam: Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, See, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and will give you ten tribes. 32One tribe will remain his, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. 33This is because he has* forsaken me, worshipped Astarte the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and has* not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my ordinances, as his father David did. 34Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom away from him but will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of my servant David whom I chose and who did keep my commandments and my statutes; 35but I will take the kingdom away from his son and give it to youthat is, the ten tribes. 36Yet to his son I will give one tribe, so that my servant David may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name. 37I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your soul desires; you shall be king over Israel. 38If you will listen to all that I command you, walk in my ways, and do what is right in my sight by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, I will be with you, and will build you an enduring house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. 39For this reason I will punish the descendants of David, but not for ever. 40Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam promptly fled to Egypt, to King Shishak of Egypt, and remained in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
41 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, all that he did as well as his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon? 42The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43Solomon slept with his ancestors and was buried in the city of his father David; and his son Rehoboam succeeded him.

18After this Paul* left Athens and went to Corinth. 2There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul* went to see them, 3and, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them, and they worked togetherby trade they were tentmakers. 4Every sabbath he would argue in the synagogue and would try to convince Jews and Greeks.
5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with proclaiming the word,* testifying to the Jews that the Messiah* was Jesus. 6When they opposed and reviled him, in protest he shook the dust from his clothes* and said to them, Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles. 7Then he left the synagogue* and went to the house of a man named Titius* Justus, a worshipper of God; his house was next door to the synagogue. 8Crispus, the official of the synagogue, became a believer in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul became believers and were baptized. 9One night the Lord said to Paul in a vision, Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; 10for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many in this city who are my people. 11He stayed there for a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
12 But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal. 13They said, This man is persuading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the law. 14Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of crime or serious villainy, I would be justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews; 15but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I do not wish to be a judge of these matters. 16And he dismissed them from the tribunal. 17Then all of them* seized Sosthenes, the official of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of these things.
18 After staying there for a considerable time, Paul said farewell to the believers* and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut, for he was under a vow. 19When they reached Ephesus, he left them there, but first he himself went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews. 20When they asked him to stay longer, he declined; 21but on taking leave of them, he said, I* will return to you, if God wills. Then he set sail from Ephesus.
