Psalm 33

1  Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, ♦︎
for it is good for the just to sing praises.
2  Praise the Lord with the lyre; ♦︎
on the ten-stringed harp sing his praise.
3  Sing for him a new song; ♦︎
play skilfully, with shouts of praise.
4  For the word of the Lord is true ♦︎
and all his works are sure.
5  He loves righteousness and justice; ♦︎
the earth is full of the loving-kindness of the Lord.
6  By the word of the Lord were the heavens made ♦︎
and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
7  He gathers up the waters of the sea as in a waterskin ♦︎
and lays up the deep in his treasury.
8  Let all the earth fear the Lord; ♦︎
stand in awe of him, all who dwell in the world.
9  For he spoke, and it was done; ♦︎
he commanded, and it stood fast.
10  The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to naught; ♦︎
he frustrates the designs of the peoples.
11  But the counsel of the Lord shall endure for ever ♦︎
and the designs of his heart from generation to generation.
12  Happy the nation whose God is the Lord ♦︎
and the people he has chosen for his own.
13  The Lord looks down from heaven ♦︎
and beholds all the children of earth.
14  From where he sits enthroned he turns his gaze ♦︎
on all who dwell on the earth.
15  He fashions all the hearts of them ♦︎
   and understands all their works.
16  No king is saved by the might of his host; ♦︎
no warrior delivered by his great strength.
17  A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; ♦︎
for all its strength it cannot save.
18  Behold, the eye of the Lord
is upon those who fear him, ♦︎
on those who wait in hope for his steadfast love,
19  To deliver their soul from death ♦︎
and to feed them in time of famine.
20  Our soul waits longingly for the Lord; ♦︎
he is our help and our shield.
21  Indeed, our heart rejoices in him; ♦︎
in his holy name have we put our trust.
22  Let your loving-kindness, O Lord, be upon us, ♦︎
as we have set our hope on you.

Zechariah 11:4-17

Two Kinds of Shepherds

4 Thus said the Lord my God: Be a shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter. 5Those who buy them kill them and go unpunished; and those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the Lord, for I have become rich’; and their own shepherds have no pity on them. 6For I will no longer have pity on the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord. I will cause them, every one, to fall each into the hand of a neighbour, and each into the hand of the king; and they shall devastate the earth, and I will deliver no one from their hand.

7 So, on behalf of the sheep dealers, I became the shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter. I took two staffs; one I named Favour, the other I named Unity, and I tended the sheep. 8In one month I disposed of the three shepherds, for I had become impatient with them, and they also detested me. 9So I said, ‘I will not be your shepherd. What is to die, let it die; what is to be destroyed, let it be destroyed; and let those that are left devour the flesh of one another!’ 10I took my staff Favour and broke it, annulling the covenant that I had made with all the peoples. 11So it was annulled on that day, and the sheep dealers, who were watching me, knew that it was the word of the Lord. 12I then said to them, ‘If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.’ So they weighed out as my wages thirty shekels of silver. 13Then the Lord said to me, ‘Throw it into the treasury’*—this lordly price at which I was valued by them. So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them into the treasury* in the house of the Lord. 14Then I broke my second staff Unity, annulling the family ties between Judah and Israel.

15 Then the Lord said to me: Take once more the implements of a worthless shepherd. 16For I am now raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for the perishing, or seek the wandering,* or heal the maimed, or nourish the healthy,* but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.
17 Oh, my worthless shepherd,
   who deserts the flock!
May the sword strike his arm
   and his right eye!
Let his arm be completely withered,
   his right eye utterly blinded!

Mark 11:12-26

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14He said to it, ‘May no one ever eat fruit from you again.’ And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

15 Then they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves; 16and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17He was teaching and saying, ‘Is it not written,
“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations”?
But you have made it a den of robbers.’
18And when the chief priests and the scribes heard it, they kept looking for a way to kill him; for they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching. 19And when evening came, Jesus and his disciples* went out of the city.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

20 In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21Then Peter remembered and said to him, ‘Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.’ 22Jesus answered them, ‘Have* faith in God. 23Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, “Be taken up and thrown into the sea”, and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. 24So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received* it, and it will be yours.

25 ‘Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.’*
