1 I will bless the Lord at all times; ♦︎
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall glory in the Lord; ♦︎
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 O magnify the Lord with me; ♦︎
let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the Lord and he answered me ♦︎
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Look upon him and be radiant ♦︎
and your faces shall not be ashamed.
6 This poor soul cried, and the Lord heard me ♦︎
and saved me from all my troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him ♦︎
and delivers them.
8 O taste and see that the Lord is gracious; ♦︎
blessed is the one who trusts in him.
9 Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones, ♦︎
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 Lions may lack and suffer hunger, ♦︎
but those who seek the Lord
lack nothing that is good.
11 Come, my children, and listen to me; ♦︎
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who is there who delights in life ♦︎
and longs for days to enjoy good things?
13 Keep your tongue from evil ♦︎
and your lips from lying words.
14 Turn from evil and do good; ♦︎
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous ♦︎
and his ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, ♦︎
to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry and the Lord hears them ♦︎
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted ♦︎
and will save those who are crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the troubles of the righteous; ♦︎
from them all will the Lord deliver them.
20 He keeps all their bones, ♦︎
so that not one of them is broken.
21 But evil shall slay the wicked ♦︎
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants ♦︎
and will condemn none who seek refuge in him.

16The Lord said to Samuel, How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons. 2Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you. 4Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Do you come peaceably? 5He said, Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, Surely the Lords anointed is now before the Lord.* 7But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. 8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, Neither has the Lord chosen this one. 9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen this one. 10Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, The Lord has not chosen any of these. 11Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your sons here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here. 12He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, Rise and anoint him; for this is the one. 13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
14 Now the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. 15And Sauls servants said to him, See now, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16Let our lord now command the servants who attend you to look for someone who is skilful in playing the lyre; and when the evil spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will feel better. 17So Saul said to his servants, Provide for me someone who can play well, and bring him to me. 18One of the young men answered, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skilful in playing, a man of valour, a warrior, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence; and the Lord is with him. 19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, Send me your son David who is with the sheep. 20Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a kid, and sent them by his son David to Saul. 21And David came to Saul, and entered his service. Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armour-bearer. 22Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David remain in my service, for he has found favour in my sight. 23And whenever the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand, and Saul would be relieved and feel better, and the evil spirit would depart from him.

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land* until three in the afternoon, 45while the suns light failed;* and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last. 47When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, Certainly this man was innocent.* 48And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
50 Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph, who, though a member of the council, 51had not agreed to their plan and action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and he was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God. 52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a rock-hewn tomb where no one had ever been laid. 54It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.* 55The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments.
On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
