1 As the deer longs for the water brooks, ♦︎
so longs my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul is athirst for God, even for the living God; ♦︎
when shall I come before the presence of God?
3 My tears have been my bread day and night, ♦︎
while all day long they say to me, Where is now your God?
4 Now when I think on these things, I pour out my soul: ♦︎
how I went with the multitude
and led the procession to the house of God,
5 With the voice of praise and thanksgiving, ♦︎
among those who kept holy day.
6 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, ♦︎
and why are you so disquieted within me?
7 O put your trust in God; ♦︎
for I will yet give him thanks,
who is the help of my countenance, and my God.
8 My soul is heavy within me; ♦︎
therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan,
and from Hermon and the hill of Mizar.
9 Deep calls to deep in the thunder of your waterfalls; ♦︎
all your breakers and waves have gone over me.
10 The Lord will grant his loving-kindness in the daytime; ♦︎
through the night his song will be with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
11 I say to God my rock,
Why have you forgotten me, ♦︎
and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresses me?
12 As they crush my bones, my enemies mock me; ♦︎
while all day long they say to me, Where is now your God?
13 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul, ♦︎
and why are you so disquieted within me?
14 O put your trust in God; ♦︎
for I will yet give him thanks,
who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

12Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from* Egypt. 3And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, 4Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke that he placed on us, and we will serve you. 5He said to them, Go away for three days, then come again to me. So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the older men who had attended his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, How do you advise me to answer this people? 7They answered him, If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants for ever. 8But he disregarded the advice that the older men gave him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and now attended him. 9He said to them, What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, Lighten the yoke that your father put on us? 10The young men who had grown up with him said to him, Thus you should say to this people who spoke to you, Your father made our yoke heavy, but you must lighten it for us; thus you should say to them, My little finger is thicker than my fathers loins. 11Now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had said, Come to me again on the third day. 13The king answered the people harshly. He disregarded the advice that the older men had given him 14and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions. 15So the king did not listen to the people, because it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfil his word, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king,
What share do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
To your tents, O Israel!
Look now to your own house, O David.
So Israel went away to their tents.
17But Rehoboam reigned over the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah.
18When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labour, all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam then hurriedly mounted his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
20 When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed the house of David, except the tribe of Judah alone.
21 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen troops to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon. 22But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: 23Say to King Rehoboam of Judah, son of Solomon, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your kindred the people of Israel. Let everyone go home, for this thing is from me. So they heeded the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord.

22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem* and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia* and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24 Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. 25He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. 27And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the believers* encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers, 28for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Messiah* is Jesus.
19While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3Then he said, Into what then were you baptized? They answered, Into Johns baptism. 4Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied 7altogether there were about twelve of them.
