Psalm 71

1  In you, O Lord, do I seek refuge; ♦︎
let me never be put to shame.
2  In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; ♦︎
incline your ear to me and save me.
3  Be for me a stronghold to which I may ever resort; ♦︎
send out to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
4  Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, ♦︎
from the grasp of the evildoer and the oppressor.
5  For you are my hope, O Lord God, ♦︎
my confidence, even from my youth.
6  Upon you have I leaned from my birth,
when you drew me from my mother’s womb; ♦︎
my praise shall be always of you.
7  I have become a portent to many, ♦︎
but you are my refuge and my strength.
8  Let my mouth be full of your praise ♦︎
and your glory all the day long.
9  Do not cast me away in the time of old age; ♦︎
forsake me not when my strength fails.
10  For my enemies are talking against me, ♦︎
and those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together.
11  They say, ‘God has forsaken him;
pursue him and take him, ♦︎
because there is none to deliver him.’
12  O God, be not far from me; ♦︎
come quickly to help me, O my God.
13  Let those who are against me
be put to shame and disgrace; ♦︎
let those who seek to do me evil
be covered with scorn and reproach.
14  But as for me I will hope continually ♦︎
and will praise you more and more.
15  My mouth shall tell of your righteousness
and salvation all the day long, ♦︎
for I know no end of the telling.
16  I will begin with the mighty works of the Lord God; ♦︎
I will recall your righteousness, yours alone.
17  O God, you have taught me since I was young, ♦︎
and to this day I tell of your wonderful works.
18  Forsake me not, O God,
      when I am old and grey-headed, ♦︎
till I make known your deeds to the next generation
and your power to all that are to come.
19  Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens; ♦︎
in the great things you have done, who is like you, O God?
20  What troubles and adversities you have shown me, ♦︎
and yet you will turn and refresh me
and bring me from the deep of the earth again.
21  Increase my honour; ♦︎
   turn again and comfort me.
22  Therefore will I praise you upon the harp
for your faithfulness, O my God; ♦︎
I will sing to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
23  My lips will sing out as I play to you, ♦︎
and so will my soul, which you have redeemed.
24  My tongue also will tell of your righteousness all the day long, ♦︎
for they shall be shamed and disgraced
who sought to do me evil.

1 Samuel 24:1-22

David Spares Saul’s Life

24When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, ‘David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.’ 2Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to look for David and his men in the direction of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3He came to the sheepfolds beside the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself.* Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. 4The men of David said to him, ‘Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, “I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good to you.” ’ Then David went and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s cloak. 5Afterwards David was stricken to the heart because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s cloak. 6He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to raise my hand against him; for he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 7So David scolded his men severely and did not permit them to attack Saul. Then Saul got up and left the cave, and went on his way.

8 Afterwards David also rose up and went out of the cave and called after Saul, ‘My lord the king!’ When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance. 9David said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen to the words of those who say, “David seeks to do you harm”? 10This very day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you into my hand in the cave; and some urged me to kill you, but I spared* you. I said, “I will not raise my hand against my lord; for he is the Lord’s anointed.” 11See, my father, see the corner of your cloak in my hand; for by the fact that I cut off the corner of your cloak, and did not kill you, you may know for certain that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you are hunting me to take my life. 12May the Lord judge between me and you! May the Lord avenge me on you; but my hand shall not be against you. 13As the ancient proverb says, “Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness”; but my hand shall not be against you. 14Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A single flea? 15May the Lord therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and you. May he see to it, and plead my cause, and vindicate me against you.’

16 When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, ‘Is that your voice, my son David?’ Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17He said to David, ‘You are more righteous than I; for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. 18Today you have explained how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 19For who has ever found an enemy, and sent the enemy safely away? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20Now I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. 21Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants after me, and that you will not wipe out my name from my father’s house.’ 22So David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Acts 3:11-26

Peter Speaks in Solomon’s Portico

11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s Portico, utterly astonished. 12When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, ‘You Israelites,* why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant* Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. 14But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, 15and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus* has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.

17 ‘And now, friends,* I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah* would suffer. 19Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, 20so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah* appointed for you, that is, Jesus, 21who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets. 22Moses said, “The Lord your God will raise up for you from your own people* a prophet like me. You must listen to whatever he tells you. 23And it will be that everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be utterly rooted out from the people.” 24And all the prophets, as many as have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, also predicted these days. 25You are the descendants of the prophets and of the covenant that God gave to your ancestors, saying to Abraham, “And in your descendants all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 26When God raised up his servant,* he sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.’
