Psalm 85

1  Lord, you were gracious to your land; ♦︎
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2  You forgave the offence of your people ♦︎
   and covered all their sins.
3  You laid aside all your fury ♦︎
and turned from your wrathful indignation.
4  Restore us again, O God our Saviour, ♦︎
and let your anger cease from us.
5  Will you be displeased with us for ever? ♦︎
Will you stretch out your wrath from one generation to another?
6  Will you not give us life again, ♦︎
that your people may rejoice in you?
7  Show us your mercy, O Lord, ♦︎
   and grant us your salvation.
8  I will listen to what the Lord God will say, ♦︎
for he shall speak peace to his people and to the faithful,
that they turn not again to folly.
9  Truly, his salvation is near to those who fear him, ♦︎
that his glory may dwell in our land.
10  Mercy and truth are met together, ♦︎
   righteousness and peace have kissed each other;
11  Truth shall spring up from the earth ♦︎
and righteousness look down from heaven.
12  The Lord will indeed give all that is good, ♦︎
and our land will yield its increase.
13  Righteousness shall go before him ♦︎
and direct his steps in the way.

Psalm 86

1  Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, ♦︎
for I am poor and in misery.
2  Preserve my soul, for I am faithful; ♦︎
save your servant, for I put my trust in you.
3  Be merciful to me, O Lord, for you are my God; ♦︎
I call upon you all the day long.
4  Gladden the soul of your servant, ♦︎
for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
5  For you, Lord, are good and forgiving, ♦︎
abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
6  Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer ♦︎
and listen to the voice of my supplication.
7  In the day of my distress I will call upon you, ♦︎
   for you will answer me.
8  Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord, ♦︎
   nor any works like yours.
9  All nations you have made shall come and worship you, O Lord, ♦︎
   and shall glorify your name.
10  For you are great and do wonderful things; ♦︎
   you alone are God.
11  Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; ♦︎
knit my heart to you, that I may fear your name.
12  I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart, ♦︎
   and glorify your name for evermore;
13  For great is your steadfast love towards me, ♦︎
for you have delivered my soul from the depths of the grave.
14  O God, the proud rise up against me
and a ruthless horde seek after my life; ♦︎
they have not set you before their eyes.
15  But you, Lord, are gracious and full of compassion, ♦︎
slow to anger and full of kindness and truth.
16  Turn to me and have mercy upon me; ♦︎
give your strength to your servant
and save the child of your handmaid.
17  Show me a token of your favour,
that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed; ♦︎
because you, O Lord, have helped and comforted me.

2 Corinthians 2: 12-17

Paul’s Anxiety in Troas

12 When I came to Troas to proclaim the good news of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord; 13but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said farewell to them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. 15For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? 17For we are not peddlers of God’s word like so many;* but in Christ we speak as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.
