1 It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord ♦︎
and to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
2 To tell of your love early in the morning ♦︎
and of your faithfulness in the night-time,
3 Upon the ten-stringed instrument, upon the harp, ♦︎
and to the melody of the lyre.
4 For you, Lord, have made me glad by your acts, ♦︎
and I sing aloud at the works of your hands.
5 O Lord, how glorious are your works! ♦︎
Your thoughts are very deep.
6 The senseless do not know, ♦︎
nor do fools understand,
7 That though the wicked sprout like grass ♦︎
and all the workers of iniquity flourish,
8 It is only to be destroyed for ever; ♦︎
but you, O Lord, shall be exalted for evermore.
9 For lo, your enemies, O Lord,
lo, your enemies shall perish, ♦︎
and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
10 But my horn you have exalted
like the horns of wild oxen; ♦︎
I am anointed with fresh oil.
11 My eyes will look down on my foes; ♦︎
my ears shall hear the ruin of the evildoers
who rise up against me.
12 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, ♦︎
and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon.
13 Such as are planted in the house of the Lord ♦︎
shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bear fruit in old age; ♦︎
they shall be vigorous and in full leaf;
15 That they may show that the Lord is true; ♦︎
he is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in him.

7Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2the king said to the prophet Nathan, See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent. 3Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.
4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders* of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar? 8Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; 9and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 12When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. When he commits iniquity, I will punish him with a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings. 15But I will not take* my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me;* your throne shall be established for ever. 17In accordance with all these words and with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

44 Our ancestors had the tent of testimony in the wilderness, as God* directed when he spoke to Moses, ordering him to make it according to the pattern he had seen.
45Our ancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors. And it was there until the time of David,
46who found favour with God and asked that he might find a dwelling-place for the house of Jacob.*
47But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
48Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands;* as the prophet says,
49 Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?
51 You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are for ever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. 52Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. 53You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it.
