4Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.
3The tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.
4But he answered, It is written,
One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
He will command his angels concerning you,
and On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
7Jesus said to him, Again it is written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour;
9and he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.
10Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! for it is written,
Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.
11Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
12 Now when Jesus* heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee.
13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
15 Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,
on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles
16 the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.
17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.*
18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lakefor they were fishermen.
19And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.
20Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.
22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.
23 Jesus* went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news* of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. 24So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them. 25And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

6Now this is the commandmentthe statutes and the ordinancesthat the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, 2so that you and your children and your childrens children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. 3Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.* 5You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 6Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. 7Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 8Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem* on your forehead, 9and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10 When the Lord your God has brought you into the land that he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give youa land with fine, large cities that you did not build, 11houses filled with all sorts of goods that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plantand when you have eaten your fill, 12take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13The Lord your God you shall fear; him you shall serve, and by his name alone you shall swear. 14Do not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are all around you, 15because the Lord your God, who is present with you, is a jealous God. The anger of the Lord your God would be kindled against you and he would destroy you from the face of the earth.
16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.

those who lived in a land of deep darkness
on them light has shined.

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned 13sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. 14Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.
15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one mans trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. 16And the free gift is not like the effect of the one mans sin. For the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. 17If, because of the one mans trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
18 Therefore just as one mans trespass led to condemnation for all, so one mans act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. 19For just as by the one mans disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one mans obedience the many will be made righteous.
