13The Lord said to Moses, 2Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites; from each of their ancestral tribes you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.
25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27And they told him, We came to the land to which you sent us; it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28Yet the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are fortified and very large; and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29The Amalekites live in the land of the Negeb; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea, and along the Jordan.
30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it. 31Then the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against this people, for they are stronger than we are. 32So they brought to the Israelites an unfavourable report of the land that they had spied out, saying, The land that we have gone through as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are of great size. 33There we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim); and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.
14Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2And all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 27How long shall this wicked congregation complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, which they complain against me. 28Say to them, As I live, says the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: 29your dead bodies shall fall in this very wilderness; and of all your number, included in the census, from twenty years old and upwards, who have complained against me, 34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day a year, you shall bear your iniquity, forty years, and you shall know my displeasure. 35I the Lord have spoken; surely I will do thus to all this wicked congregation gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.

6 Both we and our ancestors have sinned;
we have committed iniquity, have done wickedly.
7 Our ancestors, when they were in Egypt,
did not consider your wonderful works;
they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
but rebelled against the Most High* at the Red Sea.*
13 But they soon forgot his works;
they did not wait for his counsel.
14 But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness,
and put God to the test in the desert;
21 They forgot God, their Saviour,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22 wondrous works in the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.*
23 Therefore he said he would destroy them
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

15Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
2Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.
3He answered them, And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
4For God said,* Honour your father and your mother, and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.
5But you say that whoever tells father or mother, Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,* then that person need not honour the father.*
6So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word* of God.
7You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:
8 This people honours me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.
10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and understand: 11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. 12Then the disciples approached and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees took offence when they heard what you said? 13He answered, Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind.* And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit. 15But Peter said to him, Explain this parable to us. 16Then he said, Are you also still without understanding? 17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? 18But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. 19For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. 20These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.
21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon. 23But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. 24He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. 26He answered, It is not fair to take the childrens food and throw it to the dogs. 27She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. 28Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly.
