5Once while Jesus* was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, 2he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. 5Simon answered, Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets. 6When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. 7So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man! 9For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people. 11When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

40 A leper* came to him begging him, and kneeling* he said to him, If you choose, you can make me clean. 41Moved with pity,* Jesus* stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, I do choose. Be made clean! 42Immediately the leprosy* left him, and he was made clean. 43After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, 44saying to him, See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. 45But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus* could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.

8When Jesus* had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; 2and there was a leper* who came to him and knelt before him, saying, Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean. 3He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I do choose. Be made clean! Immediately his leprosy* was cleansed. 4Then Jesus said to him, See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.

12 Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy.* When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean. 13Then Jesus* stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, I do choose. Be made clean. Immediately the leprosy* left him. 14And he ordered him to tell no one. Go, he said, and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them. 15But now more than ever the word about Jesus* spread abroad; many crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. 16But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray.

2When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
2So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them.
3Then some people* came, bringing to him a paralysed man, carried by four of them.
4And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.
5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven.
6Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,
7Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?
8At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?
9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Stand up and take your mat and walk?
10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sinshe said to the paralytic
11I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.
12And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, We have never seen anything like this!

91And after getting into a boat he crossed the water and came to his own town.
2 And just then some people were carrying a paralysed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven. 3Then some of the scribes said to themselves, This man is blaspheming. 4But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5For which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Stand up and walk? 6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sinshe then said to the paralyticStand up, take your bed and go to your home. 7And he stood up and went to his home. 8When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings.

17 One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting nearby (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.* 18Just then some men came, carrying a paralysed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus;* 19but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd* in front of Jesus. 20When he saw their faith, he said, Friend,* your sins are forgiven you. 21Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? 22When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Stand up and walk? 24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sinshe said to the one who was paralysedI say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home. 25Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God. 26Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, We have seen strange things today.

13 Jesus* went out again beside the lake; the whole crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. 14As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up and followed him.
15 And as he sat at dinner* in Levis* house, many tax-collectors and sinners were also sitting* with Jesus and his disciplesfor there were many who followed him. 16When the scribes of* the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax-collectors, they said to his disciples, Why does he eat* with tax-collectors and sinners? 17When Jesus heard this, he said to them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.

9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up and followed him.
10 And as he sat at dinner* in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting* with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors and sinners? 12But when he heard this, he said, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.

27 After this he went out and saw a tax-collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, Follow me. 28And he got up, left everything, and followed him.
29 Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax-collectors and others sitting at the table* with them. 30The Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax-collectors and sinners? 31Jesus answered, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.

18 Now Johns disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people* came and said to him, Why do Johns disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast? 19Jesus said to them, The wedding-guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.
21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.*

14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast often,* but your disciples do not fast? 15And Jesus said to them, The wedding-guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak, for the patch pulls away from the cloak, and a worse tear is made. 17Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.

33 Then they said to him, Johns disciples, like the disciples of the Pharisees, frequently fast and pray, but your disciples eat and drink. 34Jesus said to them, You cannot make wedding-guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? 35The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 36He also told them a parable: No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, The old is good. *
