4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung upfor the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; 6but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground 7then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground,* and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. 8And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16And the Lord God commanded the man, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul.
O Lord my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honour and majesty,
2 wrapped in light as with a garment.
You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
27 These all look to you
to give them their food in due season;
28 when you give to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth your spirit,* they are created;
and you renew the face of the ground.

14 Then he called the crowd again and said to them, Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 15there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.*
17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18He said to them, Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile,
19since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
20And he said, It is what comes out of a person that defiles.
21For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder,
22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly.
23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.
