James 5:1-6

Warning to Rich Oppressors

5Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. 2Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. 3Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure* for the last days. 4Listen! The wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts on a day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who does not resist you.

Psalm 49

The Folly of Trust in Riches

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.
1 Hear this, all you peoples;
   give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
14 Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
   Death shall be their shepherd;
straight to the grave they descend,*
   and their form shall waste away;
   Sheol shall be their home.*
15 But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol,
   for he will receive me.
          Selah

16 Do not be afraid when some become rich,
   when the wealth of their houses increases.
17 For when they die they will carry nothing away;
   their wealth will not go down after them.
18 Though in their lifetime they count themselves happy
   —for you are praised when you do well for yourself—
19 they* will go to the company of their ancestors,
   who will never again see the light.
20 Mortals cannot abide in their pomp;
   they are like the animals that perish.

Mark 9:41-50

41For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

Temptations to Sin

42 ‘If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me,* it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. 43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell,* to the unquenchable fire.* 45And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell.*,* 47And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell,* 48where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.

49 ‘For everyone will be salted with fire.* 50Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it?* Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.’
