Hosea 2:14-18, 19-22

14 Therefore, I will now persuade her,
   and bring her into the wilderness,
   and speak tenderly to her.
15 From there I will give her her vineyards,
   and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope.
There she shall respond as in the days of her youth,
   as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.
16On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, ‘My husband’, and no longer will you call me, ‘My Baal’.* 17For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be mentioned by name no more. 18I will make for you* a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish* the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. 19And I will take you for my wife for ever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. 20I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord.
21 On that day I will answer, says the Lord,
   I will answer the heavens
   and they shall answer the earth;
22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
   and they shall answer Jezreel;*

Psalm 145

The Greatness and the Goodness of God

Praise. Of David.
1 I will extol you, my God and King,
   and bless your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you,
   and praise your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
   his greatness is unsearchable.

4 One generation shall laud your works to another,
   and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
   and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
   and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
   and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
   slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all,
   and his compassion is over all that he has made.

Matthew 9:18-26

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue* came in and knelt before him, saying, ‘My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.’ 19And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21for she said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.’ 22Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, ‘Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And instantly the woman was made well. 23When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute-players and the crowd making a commotion, 24he said, ‘Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him. 25But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26And the report of this spread throughout that district.
