¹³ ‘Let me have silence, and I will speak,
   and let come on me what may.
¹⁴ I will take my flesh in my teeth,
   and put my life in my hand.^*
15 See, he will kill me; I have no hope;^*
   but I will defend my ways to his face.
¹⁶ This will be my salvation,
   that the godless shall not come before him.
¹⁷ Listen carefully to my words,
   and let my declaration be in your ears.
¹⁸ I have indeed prepared my case;
   I know that I shall be vindicated.
¹⁹ Who is there that will contend with me?
   For then I would be silent and die.

Job’s Despondent Prayer

²⁰ Only grant two things to me,
   then I will not hide myself from your face:
²¹ withdraw your hand far from me,
   and do not let dread of you terrify me.
²² Then call, and I will answer;
   or let me speak, and you reply to me.
²³ How many are my iniquities and my sins?
   Make me know my transgression and my sin.
²⁴ Why do you hide your face,
   and count me as your enemy?
²⁵ Will you frighten a windblown leaf
   and pursue dry chaff?
²⁶ For you write bitter things against me,
   and make me reap^* the iniquities of my youth.
²⁷ You put my feet in the stocks,
   and watch all my paths;
   you set a bound to the soles of my feet.
²⁸ One wastes away like a rotten thing,
   like a garment that is moth-eaten.

14‘A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble,
²   comes up like a flower and withers,
   flees like a shadow and does not last.
³ Do you fix your eyes on such a one?
   Do you bring me into judgement with you?
⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
   No one can.
⁵ Since their days are determined,
   and the number of their months is known to you,
   and you have appointed the bounds that they cannot pass,
⁶ look away from them, and desist,^*
   that they may enjoy, like labourers, their days.

Exaltation through Abasement

5 Now God^* did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. ⁶But someone has testified somewhere,
‘What are human beings that you are mindful of them,^*
   or mortals, that you care for them?^*
7 You have made them for a little while lower^* than the angels;
   you have crowned them with glory and honour,^*
8   subjecting all things under their feet.’
Now in subjecting all things to them, God^* left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, ⁹but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower^* than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God^* he might taste death for everyone.

10 It was fitting that God,^* for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. ¹¹For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father.^* For this reason Jesus^* is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,^{* 12}saying,
‘I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,^*
   in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.’
¹³And again,
‘I will put my trust in him.’
And again,
‘Here am I and the children whom God has given me.’

14 Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, ¹⁵and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. ¹⁶For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. ¹⁷Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters^* in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. ¹⁸Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
